Feel the Power of the BR380 Stihl Backpack Blower

!: Feel the Power of the BR380 Stihl Backpack Blower

This is a really powerful machine. It has the same engine as the 420 model, which is a hefty 56.5 cc power unit. It puts out over three and half horsepower and this is put to good use in creating a blower air speed of 181 miles per hour with a volume of air moved of 465 cubic feet per minute. These measurements are taken at the end of the tube which means that this is exactly what hits the leaves when you aim the tool at them. The main difference between this machine and the 420 is that it has a smaller tube diameter. This has the effect of creating a faster air speed.

This faster air speed means that it can break up clumps of leaves and then the 465 CFM keeps them moving. It doesn't matter if the leaves are wet or dry this blower shifts them all the same. As well as leaves this machine is perfect for moving grass cuttings. It can easily move large piles of fresh grass cuttings even if they are wet.

It is a very high quality tool which should last a long time. The two stroke engine is manufactured with dual piston rings, chrome lined cylinder bore and a forged crank shaft. These all help to give it a long service life. It is also designed to be easily and quickly serviced.

The blower has a translucent fuel tank so that the level can easily be seen. The tank holds one and a half liters of fuel. This is made up to the usual fifty to one gas to oil mixture ratio for 2 stroke engines. A full tank will give about ninety minutes of work time, even if the blower is used at full throttle. Compared with other smaller engine models it could be considered as being a bit of a gas guzzler. Never the less the engine has reduced emissions compared to earlier versions.

The BR380 Stihl backpack blower is reasonably easy to start. When cold it can take four to five pulls and when warm one to two pulls. There is no primer for the fuel and this may explain the extra pulls needed. Once going it runs very smoothly and accelerates quickly without hesitation, even when cold. Considering its ability it is reasonably quiet creating a noise level of 73db. You can get a vacuum kit and a spray conversion kit to make this tool even more versatile.

In terms of ergonomics the straps and back pad are very comfortable and it is easy enough to put on. The machine weighs just over 20lb which means that it can get to feel a little heavy after you have used it for a while. The easy grip throttle is trigger operated and is positioned on a handle attached to the down tube for easy access. There is also an on off switch and cruise control which means that you can set the power you want to use and don't have to keep the trigger held all of the time. There is a built in top carry handle and tool holder.  It can be a little difficult to use in confined spaces. However in wide open areas it is very easy to use and very powerful.

If you are looking for a professional, powerful, comfortable and easy to use backpack leaf blower that gives you the most blow for your buck then this could be the one for you. It easily copes with grass clippings and light to moderate leaf clean up and is manufactured using quality parts which give it a long service life. Yes, you really need to feel the power.

Air Movement in Grow Room - Some Basic Considerations

!: Air Movement in Grow Room - Some Basic Considerations

Plants grow best in an environment that is well ventilated to effectively dissipate heat. All artificial light sources generate heat and grow rooms have to be therefore, provided with some means of cooling. Cooling of grow rooms is best done using blowers, with one mounted on the inside to blow hot air out, and the other mounted on the outside to blow cool air in. This arrangement works best with the hot air exhaust blower mounted up high inside and the cool air blower mounted low on the outside, as hot air being lighter than the surrounding air tends to rise while cool air tends to settle to the bottom.

Exhaust blowers are sized on the basis of the amount of air they can move. Normally blower capacities are quoted in CFM i.e. Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) of air, like say "315 CFM" which means that the blower will move 315 cubic feet of air in one minute, provided there are no restrictions on the intake or exhaust. But it is not possible to completely eliminate intake or exhaust restrictions. Some restriction will always be there, in the form of hose resistance. When air flows through a hose, it has to overcome the resistance of the hose which heats up the air, it is advisable therefore to select the hose that offers the least resistance to air movement. Aluminum tubing with its smooth inside wall surface offers low resistance to air flow and it therefore ideally suited for such applications.

Apart from the losses due to hose resistance, there are other factors that need to be considered while sizing blowers to suit the requirements of your hydrohut grow room. The blower size will basically depend on the size of the grow tent and the number of air changes that need to be effected per hour. A 6x6x8 (6 feet wide x 6 feet long x 8 feet ceiling height) grow tent that requires to have its air changed every minute or so will require a blower of capacity around 265 CFM. But exhausting the hot air inside will not by itself ensure adequate cooling. It is also necessary to ensure that the hot air inside is replaced by cold air from outside to effect good cooling. That is the reason why it is important to draw in cool air from outside using another blower.

The number of air changes required per hour depends on factors like plant density inside the grow tent, heat build up and other growth factors. Higher air change rates are best suited to large, mature crops in warm, humid conditions. In most cases, however, plants in grow rooms require only about 20-30 air changes per hour. One complete air change every 4-5 minutes is generally acceptable, but if lighting is creating a lot of extra heat that needs to be removed air changes will need to be more frequent probably every 2 -3 minutes.

Conclusion

Air movement with a correctly sized fan plays an important role in determining the success of any indoor crop. Though it is often overlooked, air movement is essential to maintaining optimal conditions for plant growth. It serves to ensure the correct levels of temperature, humidity and CO2 at the leaf surface which is the critical interface for vital plant processes like photosynthesis and transpiration.

The Commercial Leaf Vacuum Handles The Bigger Jobs And Challenges!

!: The Commercial Leaf Vacuum Handles The Bigger Jobs And Challenges!

Raving customers are thrilled and impressed with how well the commercial leaf vacuum works on tough outdoor clean-up duties. They are referring to the handy yard tool as the king of powerful tools!

This unit is Tanaka's largest blower which has a 65 cc engine, 850 CFM output, and a tube-mounted throttle control switch. It is an ideal blower to handle the bigger jobs and more challenging applications.

Its simplified construction makes it a super lightweight engine that delivers maximum performance without requiring any additional service. The light weight structure provides less fatigue on the operator.

The Tanaka backpack blower has an air velocity of 205 miles per hour (MPH) and an air volume of 805 cubic feet per minute (CFM).With the commercial combination of high levels of airflow and volume; it will rarely be matched by any other on the market.

The low emissions two-stroke engine does not have valves, which simplify its construction even more. Giving the two-stroke engines a significant power boost and twice the power they fire once every revolution compared to a four-stroke, which fire once every other revolution.

This industrial leaf blower has cruise control with a tube-mounted throttle that has an easy access control switch allowing the operator to move around freely. The cruise control is perfect for reducing fatigue and stress while working for long periods.

When compared to other brand models the Tanaka Backpack gas blower is by far the best model on the market. It has less moving engine parts with a hassle free no valve adjustment. The super large fuel tank has a capacity of 60 oz. That allows you to have longer running time without having to re-fuel like with other models.

This is the ideal commercial leaf vacuum for anyone that is looking for a tough soldier in a blower to eliminate and reduce your workload in a quick and efficient matter. Depend on the Commercial-Grade Tanaka TBL-7800R Backpack Gas Blower to Tackle Everyday Jobs and Bigger Challenges.

Today, all Tanaka products comply with EPA phase 2 regulations and all Tanaka product groups are C.A.R.B Tier II compliant. Most other manufacturers tried to fight the standard and say that it could not be done with two-stroke, Tanaka did it.

The Environmental Cost of US Lawns

!: The Environmental Cost of US Lawns

According to a recent article published by Science Daily, "Using census data, satellite images, aerial photographs, and computer simulations, a NASA scientist estimated that turf grass is the single-largest irrigated crop in the United States" which begs the question what is the environmental cost? When we use three times as much water to irrigate our lawns than to provide water for corn it is obvious we, as a nation, have a serious problem.

We can thank Cristina Milesi, an Italian remote-sensins scientist at California State University-Monterey Bay and at NASA/Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. for this amazing yet frightening revelation. Using census data, satellite images and aerial photographs Cristina was able to estimate the total amount of turf grass found in the 48 contiguous states. Computer simulations where used to estimate the environmental impact of maintaining all those lawns.

Exactly how much of the United States is dedicated to Lawns or Turf Grass?

According to the Cristina's study about 128,000 square kilometers or nearly 32 million acres of the United States are covered with turf grass. This officially makes turf grass our nations largest irrigated crop. Placed together we have enough turf grass in the United States to create a single lawn large enough to cover the entire state of Kentucky or 40,411 square miles.

How much money is spent on maintaining US lawns?

Lawn care in the United States is big business - while estimates vary a 2002 Harris Survey suggests as a nation we spend .9 billion yearly. To put that into a personal perspective that translates into approximately ,200 per household.

It's just our lawns, how much water could they use?

No matter how attached you are to your lawn it's important to understand that between 50-70% of the United States residential water is used for landscaping - most of it to simply to water lawns. That 50-70% of our residential water translates into about 10,000 gallons of water per summer per 1,000 square foot lawn.

Do lawns provide any environmental benefits?

At some level - Yes. In fact, naturally maintained organic lawns can even act as effective carbon sinks (more so than chemically treated lawns). Lawns along with trees offer the following benefits:

They help fight the urban "heat islanding" effect They provide some level of oxygen conversion They provide some level filtration of air particulates

While lawns do offer some limited benefits to the environment, due to the amount of water and chemicals we use to maintain them, we also have to understand the environmental cost.

The Environmental Cost of US Lawns

If using between 50-70% of our residential water to simply water our lawns isn't frightening enough then consider the following facts from the Safer Pest Control Project:

78 million households in the United States utilize garden pesticides 0 million is spent annually on pesticides for lawns in the US 67 million lbs of synthetic pesticides are added to lawns in the US each year We use three times as much pesticide on our lawns per acre as we do on our agricultural crops

We aren't just wasting water, a previous limited commodity, we are also literally poisoning our environment. By spreading the toxins found in common garden pesticides we are doing an amazing amount of ecological damage.

The damage caused by US turf grass isn't limited to pesticides, as a nation we use over 58 million gallons of gasoline when mowing our lawns. At .75 a gallon, which isn't available in my area, thats 9,500,000 dollars worth of gasoline. A single lawn mower can create as much pollution in one hour as a car driven for twenty miles.

Lawn mowers aren't the only environmental threat - the ever present leaf blower expels about twenty six times the carbon monixide and forty nine times the particulate matter of a new light-duty vehicle.

The Human Element

As we spray literally millions of pounds of pesticides and other lawn chemicals around our homes each year it should be obvious that the toxins will work their way into our food chains and or water tables, then eventually into us.

Consider the fact that 100% of the fish found in urban areas contain at least one pesticide. Furthermore, according to Jason Phillip of EcoLocalizer, out of "30 commonly used lawn pesticides, 16 are toxic to birds, 24 are toxic to fish and aquatic organisms, and 11 are deadly to bees." He continues with the fact that "Approximately 7 million birds a year die from exposure lawn care pesticides." If our pesticides have migrated into local fish populations why should we believe they haven't migrated into us? If our pesticides are toxic to a variety of animals why wouldn't they be at least poisonous to humans at some level? According to a report from the National Academy of Sciences, 1/7 people have had their health negatively impacted in some form by lawn pesticides.

As adults we may be less susceptible to lawn pesticides but both our children and pets are at especially high risk due to their size, and proximity to the ground. Children are further at risk because of their state of physiological development. The dangers pesticides pose to children has been documented by numerous studies including those from Yale University and Mt. Sinai Medical Center.

How Can I Create a Safe Lawn for my Family?

If you'd like to create a "safe lawn," there is a helpful non-profit group aptly titled "SafeLawns for a Healthier Planet" that has given itself the mission of "educating society about the benefits of environmentally responsible lawn care and gardening, and effect a quantum change in consumer and industry behavior."

You can find lots of useful information in the form of news, event updates and helpful how-to videos at:

http://www.safelawns.org/

An important initiative sponsored by SafeLawns for a Healthier Planet that I'd encourage everyone to participate in is the "SafeLawns Million Acre Challenge." The goal of this initiative is to encourage participants to pledge to "commit to caring for your lawn in an eco-friendly way, by eliminating synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, using push and/or electric mowers, and watering and planting responsibly."

If you'd like to participate in the SafeLawns Million Acre Challenge then visit:

While the United States may be in love with it's lush green lawns the time for change is upon us. Even our own government is taking steps towards more sustainable gardening practices. In Fall of 2007 SafeLawns for a Healthier Planet along with the National Parks Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency began maintaining a 4.3 acre center section of the National Mall in Washington, DC in a non-toxic, environmentally friendly manner. Isn't it time we all followed suit? Together we can create a safer, less polluted, non-toxic environment.
